postheadericon AMAZING: 12-year-old James Anderson KILLS a classic Michael Jackson song!

All i can say is: "God daaaaaaaayyyuuuum!!!!!!!!!!" Seriously, i got crazy goosebumps off watching 12-year-old James Anderson completely MURDER the Michael Jackson classic "Who's Loving You" at a Karaoke competition in the UK. Pitch-perfect too. Now THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is what i call God-given talent. If he hasn't made it big-time in the music industry by this exact date in 5 years time, then i promise to NEVER eat a crumb of chocolate EVER AGAIN. And i mean that.

postheadericon COMING SOON: Honey 2

Yeah, i know what you're thinking - "Oh heeeell no. Not ANOTHER corny dance movie!!!". Unfortunately, yes, it's true - HONEY is back. Wanna know what sucks most about it all? Sorry to be such a cockblock, but über-babe Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba) isn't even in it. So you can take your hand out of your pants now, fellas. Thank you. Oh, and no Missy, Tweet, Shawn Desman, Jadakiss, Styles P, 3rd Storee or Rodney Jerkins in it either. Actually, no prominent guests, by the looks of it! And since most Urban music in modern dance movies sounds like some Electro-infested audio horseshit, you're most likely not to get another legendary R&B/Hip-Hop soundtrack either. So for me - a definite 100% triple-pass!

The movie hits screens on 10th June 2011. Click HERE for further info on storyline, cast, etc.!

postheadericon THIS WEEKEND: Here's where you'll catch me rippin' it up!

19.5. | "BOOMBASTIC" | Urban Vs. Reggaeton

In the words of Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins: "They said i couldn't do it again - but i did!". Yup, besides the fact that peeps here in Basel hate to pay an entry fee for a club (!), it also takes extra-long to establish an event that doesn't take place on the weekend. I guess that's just how Basel peeps roll. But thanks to a lot of patience and persistance, my weekly residency at Club D'Rumba has been in full effect for several months and now enjoys a great, fairly peaceful, open-minded crowd that doesn't mind being taken on a musical time-travel through different eras and Urban sub-genres. Very enjoyable indeed. Oh and if you don't mind FREE ENTRY and ALMOST FREE DRINKS (every drink is CHF 5.-!), then you really don't wanna miss out. Where else can you get so much awesomeness for virtually nothing?!

20.5. | "PLAY" | New label release!

Somebody better call the fire brigade, 'cause Thai Thai Club in Zurich is about to burn down this Friday!!! The motto is "International Party Rockers". Whilst my DJ Philly from Germany handles the Mash-Up and open-format Partytunes, i'll be on the other floor servin' you the best and smoothest in soulful R&B, from Old Skool to New Skool. Aaaahhh...ain't nothin' like playin' from the heart, baby. All this niceness comes courtesy of my homeboy DJ Swissivory, who is also hosting this flavourful event. If you appreciate quality music in a club, then get your crusty behind down there!

21.5. | "GLOBAL HOUSE SENSATION" | Music Festival!

Well, uuuhhm...let's just say that this is gonna be the biggest event in Basel City this weekend. Volkshaus, Basel is where the whole sha-bang is gonna take place and yet again, it's set to be a pretty wild night. But hey - don't let the name fool you; this ISN'T JUST A HOUSE PARTY - there's a pretty nice Black Music floor for you to get your Dougie, Bounce or 2-Step on. Too many DJ's to name, international, national and local turntable heroes, and way too many infos to share, so i advise you to go and check it all out via the Facebook link below. But anyway, here's what you need to know about the Black Music floor:

postheadericon FUNNY: Notorious B.I.G. clowns his DJ on stage!

Wow...this is hilarious!!! Notorious B.I.G. wastes no time in putting DJ Big Kap on blast in front of thousands of people at the Bay Area K-MEL SUMMER JAM back in 1995, after Kap keeps messing up the music to Biggie's performance.

He got a Warning and One More Chance (*cough*), but again, the record warps, which results in Biggie going H.A.M. and throwing a bottle of water at him: "Fuckin' wrong wit you?! I can't take it no more, man!! N***a fuckin' up every joint!! What the fuck!!"

Notice how Lil' Cease is laughin' his ass off...priceless!!

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Range ft. Wale - Beautiful You Are

To hardcore R&B fans, regular downloaders and music bloggers, the name "Range" is far from unheard of, 'cause this cat has been doing his thing for a hot minute now. I remember coming across this guy for the first time in 2004 when his hot joint "Don't Hate" hit the net, featuring a sample of Buddy Baker's "Sign Song", which was also famously used on the Big Pun & Beatnuts classic "Off The Books". I thought: "Damn, this dude has a nice vocal and flava...i need to watch out for him!". And since that day he's dropped banger after banger, with personal favourites being "Wait Until Tonight (ft. Ja Rule)", "Man U Need", "Ghetto Dance (ft. Rick Ross)", "Try", the Ryan Leslie-produced "While The Gettin's Good" and "Shawty", and many others.

Over the years he's also done his fair share of work in the background as a songwriter for multi-platinum hit-making duo Stargate, by penning hits for Jamie Foxx, Ludacris and Danity Kane. Today he's signed to Rick Ross's label RocNation and is gearing up for his forthcoming, yet-untitled debut album. One thing's for sure, Theodore "Range" Bowen is one of the brightest, new stars up in the R&B sky right now - with longevity potential.

Check out Range's slammin' new single "B.Y.A. (Beautiful You Are)", featuring Wale and sampling the Cypress Hill mega-classic "Insane In The Membrane" to devastating, club-wrecking effect...DJ's - get up on this banger!!!

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Teyana Taylor - Valentine

Being a Singer / Rapper / Dancer / Actress makes Harlem native Teyana Taylor a certified quadruple threat. She first sprung to fame with her cocky, catchy debut single "Google Me" back in 2008. But she's not just your average generic R&B/Pop-tart. Oh no. She choreographed Beyoncé's "Ring The Alarm" video at the tender age of 16 (!!!), got signed to Pharrell Williams's label StarTrek in 2007, has appeared in various music videos, featured on Tracks by Chris Brown, Missy Elliott and Kanye West, starred in movies such as "Stomp The Yard 2: Homecoming", and "Tyler Perry's: Madea's Big Happy Family"...etc., etc. Her debut album "From A Planet Called Harlem" was supposed to drop a year ago, but had to push it forward due to her other commitments.

So, for those who aren't yet familiar with her music, then check out this excellent, fresh slice of uptempo R&B niceness entitled "Valentine". The quirky Old Skool-flavoured beat, along with the smooth synths and the catchy melody immediately won me over at first listen. The only bad thing about this joint, is the thought of Keyshia Cole doing a far better job, vocally...'cause this would be Taylor-made for Miss Cole. Ahem. Excuse the pun...lol...

postheadericon HALLELUJAH! Ya boy is back...

Jesus Christ. I've been waiting 9 fuckin' months for this moment. Can you believe that??? Thanks to my oh-so-wonderful domain host (NOT!!!), my address www.djsoulchild.com had been accidentally deleted and publically set to "available", even though i had paid for 2 years, yet hadn't used it for barely 8 months. Ain't that 'bout a bitch??!!

So there i go, bombarding them with e-mail after e-mail after e-mail...no response. Called up, got diverted and forwarded to multiple employees who you'd expect to be qualified enough to help you out, right? Nope. Just a total, utter bunch of lazy, useless wankers who simply didn't give a flying fuck.

And neither did i anymore. I couldn't care less if the phone call to the USA was expensive or not - shouting, cussing, releasing tension, throwing all sorts of insults down the phone at them and basically going H.A.M. without a single hint of guilty conscience was well worth the money. Whenever i'm having a bad day, i'm really tempted to call them up and blame it all on them, just for the relief factor...lol...

But anyway, i've changed hoster in the meantime and i'm really happy to be back and all up in your grills again. Got soooooo much R&B goodness and news to catch up on and share with y'all, so hold tight!

Thanks for your patience and for checkin' back!

Musically yours,

DJ SOULCHILD

postheadericon NEW REMIX: Blackstreet ft. EPMD - No Diggity (DJ Soulchild's Buttnaked Funk Remix)

Although Blackstreet have always been one of my all-time favourite R&B groups EVER and that i connect fond memories to the original version of the 1996 mega-classic "No Diggity", i still got sick of every freakin' DJ out there playin' the same ol' version in every damn club i went to or played at. What about the slammin' "Das Diggity Remix"? Shit, i don't even think i've ever heard anyone play the "Billie Jean Remix" out here in lame-ass, play-safe Switzerland either. How sad is THAT??!!

So i took the matter into my own hands and decided to not only speed it up a little, but also give it a slightly different, more Hip-Hop-flavoured street edge. DJ's worldwide, as well as my Facebook supporters seem to be lovin' it so far, plus it spread across the net like Brazilian genital herpes (no disrespect!) within no time. As with every remix, i call up a famous rapper to come and spit some bars over it for absolutely no money at all...'cause i'm cool like that, see. Yeah ok, so i lied about that again!!! Well, the calling up the rapper part, that is. 'Cause it's pretty obvious that i'm cool. Duuuuhhh!!!

Any-hoo, enjoy this little reworking of mine and feel free to flatter me and boost my ego with a comment below! Thank you!

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Havana - Higher

Don't ask me how i came across this track, i really can't remember. Just another one of those fine little discoveries you make once in a while! And fine it is indeed, 'cause after the first 15 seconds kicked in, i just knew this song was gonna be nothing less than awesome...the production is just soooo grown'n'sexy...and by the time i heard the chorus, i was hooked. Her voice and the whole atmosphere of the song just blew me away!

So obviously i was eager to find out more about this impressive San Diego-based artist and immediately did my homework. Apparently she already released an album back in 2005 called "L.I.F.E." which sold 18'000 units and caught the attention of MTV, NBC and Adidas. Wow...not bad for an independent artist nowadays! Looks like she ain't goin' nowhere for a while yet!

And after listening to the sampler of her latest album "Entervention", which is an interesting, eclectic, futuristic fusion of R&B and Neo-Soul dipped in 80's synthesizer Pop, she definitely is a breathe of fresh air with a promising future.

postheadericon NEW REMIX: Derrick Dimitry ft. D-Nice - Get It On Tonight (DJ Soulchild's Slammin' Block Party Remix)

Here's something funky, fresh and groovy for you all to ride out to throughout the Summer...my new remix of Derrick Dimitry's classic "Get It On Tonight", made famous back in 1999 by non other than the original R&B-Don-Dada Montell Jordan, who sold millions with this record alone. Too bad Derrick never got the props he deserved for this masterpiece...or the money, by the looks of it.

Try googling info on Derrick Dimitry, or even pictures of him - you can't find shit. Not even a MySpace page, so only God knows what he's doing nowadays. All i know is that he was an artist signed to mega-producer Dallas Austin's former label "Freeworld Entertainment" back in 1998, which released a rare vinyl sampler including Derrick's original version of this track. Since then it's spread like a disease and developed itself into an underground classic - i guess you could call it another case of "let the music do the talking". Funnily enough a great majority of DJ's, tastemakers and music lovers worldwide, including me, prefer this original version over the Montell re-make...

So check out this remix and be prepared to be taken on a vibealicious journey back to the golden era of R&B...when music was GOOD!!!

postheadericon SUCCESS: DJ Soulchild's Ryan Leslie remix impacts UK radio!

Feeling very blessed right about now! Looks like my remixes are starting to strike a nerve! Not only are countless DJ's reportedly bumpin' my remixes in the clubs in the USA, UK, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Italy, Latvia, Russia and Switzerland...and maybe even in other countries...but even respected, influential Urban radio DJ's are jumpin' on them!

postheadericon COMING SOON: Stomp The Yard 2: Homecoming (Trailer)

"Aaahh hell naaahh! Not another damn Streetdance movie!!", i hear you say. Yeah, i know what you mean. This year is definitely the year of dance movies, with "Step Up 3D", the UK's "Streetdance 3D" and of course this "Stomp The Yard" sequel. I'm pretty sure it's no coincidence that these movies are all dropping this year, 'cause judging by the trailers, they all look pretty impressive in terms of dance moves and choreographies, as if they're trying to out-do eachother. As always, the acting is gonna be as crap as ever, but then again that's not what counts here, is it? We want a spectacle! Some spine-tingling, bone-breaking, joint-twisting, action-packed extreme-dancing like we've never seen before!!!

But will they deliver? Well, after the first two disappointing, boring, oh-so-predictable "Step Up" movies, i'm honestly not expecting much from the new 3D sequel. "Streetdance 3D" on the other hand, despite the unbelievably appauling, uninventive title, seems more promising. One reason being that UK's best crews, the incredibly sick "Flawless" and "Diversity" (as seen on "Britain's Got Talent") are making an appearance, and the other being that the UK needs to prove themselves against the mighty Hollywood productions. The first "Stomp The Yard" movie from back in 2007 was actually pretty good, 'cause the story line was more original, the dance style "stepping" in itself is very unique, and the acting was actually surprisingly good too, actors Columbus Short and Meagan Good had some great on-screen chemistry going on! So this sequel is definitely the one i'm rooting for.

The only thing that makes me slightly sceptical, is the fact that it's going straight to DVD & BluRay on 21st September. And that usually ain't a good sign..."Save The Last Dance 2" was the best example - TERRIBLE!!! But i guess we'll just have to wait and see...

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Funky DL samples Amy Winehouse! 2 FREE albums!

Not owning a Funky DL album is one thing, as his albums can't be found in every obvious local record store, due to the simple fact that he isn't a commercial artist. But if you've never even heard of his name, then i'm sorry to say that you're simply not a true Hip-Hop fan. Point blank period.

Sadly, the UK turned its back on this legendary London, Hackney-born triple-threat rapper/producer/songwriter ever since he dropped his debut album "Classic Was The Day" back in 1997. Why? Because of his American accent when he spits. In response to that, Funky sticks a big middle finger up at those critics by explaining that he grew up listening to U.S. Hip-Hop, so that's what felt right to him when he started off. And rightly so. 'Cause whilst the UK is hatin', the rest of the world (especially Japan) is lapping up and loving his music, release after release. Just Google this restless workaholic and his huge back catalogue, especially the albums "The 4th Quarter" and "The Interview", and check the rave reviews, it is what it is baby! Besides - if European rappers are allowed to get away with rhyming with an American accent and flow, why should it be such a crime for a UK artist to do the same???

Anyway, those who appreciate, know what's on the menu whenever a Funky DL album drops: deep, meaningful, biographical and often witty lyrics dipped in good quality, organic, soulful, jazzy, neck-breaking true school Hip-Hop music - the way it's supposed to be. And on these two latest albums, he's stuck to his trademark formula...except that he's taken Amy Winehouse samples and cleverly moulded and integrated them into his own tracks - to SICK effect!!!!!!!

Don't worry or be prejudiced if you're not an Amy Winehouse fan - trust me, i'm not either. But what my man Funky DL has put together here is simply, utterly amazing, impressive and groundbreaking. Trust me, if you love good quality Hip-Hop, then you really shouldn't sleep on this. He's made me have a whole new respect and appreciation for Amy's music, and it could do the same for you. GENIUS.

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Keith Sweat - I'm The One You Want

Uh-oh...i can just imagine millions of 35-plus-year-old married women and mothers across the globe losing their minds and skipping about in an almost pubescent frenzy with a sauna in their panties right about now. 'Cause what Jason DeRulo is to you regurgitated-music-listening young'ns out there, is what Keith Sweat was to the "older" generation. But with the small exception that Keith can actually sing and his timeless, smooth babymakin' R&B has longevity power. In fact, if it weren't for Keith Sweat, you probably wouldn't be here today...yeah ok, i know picturing your parents having slappin' skins isn't exactly an enjoyable thought, but i figured it was worth a mention...

Anyway, Keith's brand-new album "Ridin' Solo" pretty much dropped out of nowhere, even i didn't see this coming. Although i did get his joint "Test Drive (feat. Joe)" a few months ago, which was a hint of a new release, but it still caught me off-guard. But hey, it's Keith, so it's always a pleasant surprise! The first thing that struck me at first quick listen, is that Keith has yet again managed to stay true to his signature style, by cleverly using modern sounds, without adapting it to the extent that he alienates his fans that have been down with or even loved his music since day one. So, if you're 18+ years old and don't mind some good-quality, soulful balladry to accompany your "sexy time", this might even appeal to you too.

BUT! It can have side-effects! If your parents hate your girlfriend/boyfriend's guts, but suddenly barge into your room with cookies, because they expected you to be doing your homework together instead, then don't be surprised if your Mum shouts "Hold on - is that Keith Sweat playin'??! Ooooh looooorrrd!! I luuuurrrve me some Keith!!!", slow-dances with your Dad for a minute, talking about when they first met until the song finishes, acting like a total cock-block. But then be prepared for the consequences...

Swiftly moving on....like most of his releases, the album consists of 90% grown'n'sexy slow jams. All good stuff. But "I'm The One You Want", a mid-tempo piece of R&B feel-good niceness, which interpolates the immortal 1987 Surface classic "Happy", was definitely the stand-out cut for me. Something to ride out and mack to in the whip on a warm Summer evening. Enjoy!

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Ahmir - Find Your Love (Drake Remix)

Those of you out there who know me well, know that i'm not easily impressed when it comes to music...and i'm especially picky and overprotective when it comes to my beloved R&B. But ever since their debut single "Welcome To My Party" dropped back in 2006, R&B group "Ahmir" (Arabic for "Prince") have never failed to impress the living crap outta me time and time and time again.

These dudes, man...i dunno how they do it, but they manage to take shitty Pop songs by artists that i hate with a vengeance, flip it completely with a whole new R&B vocal arrangement...and eventually make me LIKE the songs!!! It's crazy. And i should hate them for that, but i don't. 'Cause this group right here is on some complete other next level shit when it comes to their vocal delivery, and when i get goosebumps, it's usually a pretty good sign. I'm not saying they're Boyz II Men, as their achievements will probably always remain unmatched and unreachable for any other post-millenium R&B group, especially with the state of today's music industry...but one thing's for damn sure - they've got what it takes to carry the torch if Boyz II Men ever feel like calling it quits.

The latest Ahmir cover version is their re-make of Drake's "Find Your Love". I'm really feeling Drake as an all-round artist, because i think he's fresh and in a league of his own, and i thought "Find Your Love" was an awesome single. But then along comes Ahmir and messes it up for him by making the song EVEN BETTER.

May i add that they have already won multiple awards, gained over 15 Million YouTube views, worked with Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and even had hit records on the Billboard charts - yet they're still unsigned!!!! Impressive stuff, i know...but Jesus Christ, will someone give these dudes a break and hand them a record deal already???!!! The fuck is wrong with you labels??!

postheadericon NEW PARTY LABEL: Boombastic - Urban Vs. Reggaeton

Ok, well it's not exactly brand-spanking NEW NEW. We've actually been on this since 1st April already...but if you haven't checked out this HOT weekly Thursday-night Black Music event at Club D'Rumba yet, i guess it is still kinda new...so what the hell are you waiting for??!

For the first time in Basel City, we're fusing pumpin', quality, contemporary R&B / Soul / Hip-Hop with the rump-shakin', booty-boucin' sounds of Reggaeton - a place for all you sexy mamacitas to get down 'n' dirty, and all you homeboys to drool and slobber like hungry dogs...

As this was a new concept for Basel, and a new club for all you R&B and Hip-Hop fans, it took a while for you guys to get used to it all. But over the past 4 weeks we've noticed a remarkable growth in attendees and enjoyed some great parties with a great atmosphere!!

Oh, and did i mention that the entry and all drinks are only CHF 5.-??? Don't miss out and join in the fun...EVERY THURSDAY...with my homie DJ Moreno and myself, DJ Soulchild!

See ya there!

postheadericon NEW MUSIC: Faith Evans ft. Snoop Dogg - Way U Move

Ok, now all you modern-day pseudo-R&B Pop-tarts, just back the hell up for a freakin' second!!! 'Cause "Bad Boy's First Lady Of R&B", the legendary Faith Evans is back with a voice that puts you all to shame!!

Yezzir, judging by some of this year's releases, it seems as if real soulful R&B music is finally makin' a much-needed return to sooth and save our ears from all the horrible Electro-Pop crap we've been faced with over the past few years....our male saviours this year, dropping new albums, include Blackstreet, Donell Jones, Case, Musiq Soulchild, Maxwell, Charlie Wilson, J. Holiday, Dwele and Tank, amongst others....and leading the female contenders is the afore-mentioned Faith Evans.

And she's already off to a good start with her new single "Way U Move", which features Snoop D-O-Double-Gizzle and is a nice fusion of mid-tempo, smooth, grown'n'sexy R&B with a touch of Neo-Soul coolness. Something you can vibe out to on your i-Pod or stereos on a warm Summer evening. On the whole, i personally don't think it's one of her best efforts to date, but it definitely marks a pleasant, solid return that keeps you looking forward to what else she has in store for us on her upcoming album "Something About Faith", which will be released on 14th September through E1 Entertainment, and will include production by Jazze Pha, Easy Mo Bee, David Banner and Starr Strukk, amongst others.

postheadericon DJ SOULCHILD HOSTS: "The Making Of" SAMURAI's new video clip!

Watch out -Soulcheeezy's about! And this time i'm not armed with a turntable and a nifty hand, instead you'll soon be witnessing me making my debut appearance as a host/presenter, all up in ya face with a mic that looks like a fluffy dead kitten with a pole up it's ass! Yup, testing new waters, baby!

I know some of my international supporters out there are scratching their head and thinking: "Who the hell is Samurai??!". But i'll have you know that he actually happens to be one of Switzerland's freshest and most famous rappers. Samurai and i have been cool for a few years now, so when asked if i wanted to host "The Making Of" his new video "Plastikmeitli", featuring the equally awesome Swiss rapper Bandit, i immediately jumped at the opportunity.

The song "Plastikmeitli" (translated: "Plastic Girl") takes the piss out of bimbo chicks that wear too much make-up, have fake blown-up titties and love a dose of that trusty Botox every now and again to make their lips look like "two sausages". Hilarious! Samurai and Bandit make it perfectly clear that they like their ladies "natural styleeeee".

The video features guest appearances by long-term collaborators Rapper/Producer P. Moos and DJ/Producer DJ Freaza, as well as Zurich's one-and-only Scandalous Dancers and Model/Photographer Eda Koyun.

I'll be posting the "The Making Of" video within the next few days, but you can already go and check out the full video clip here:

SAMURAI feat. BANDIT - Plastikmeitli

"Plastikmeitli" is taken off Samurai's awesome brand-new album "Legendär". Available at all big retailers (City Disc, Ex-Libris, Media Markt, Saturn, etc.) and on i-Tunes!!
